Less than five miles away from Prairie Village is the town of Fairway, home to the Shawnee Indian Mission State Historic Site. This national historic landmark is located on a 13-acre stretch of property and features three historic buildings, period rooms and exhibits. Here Shawnee natives were schooled and manually trained from 1839-1862. The mission served as an early territorial capital as well as a supply point for those traversing the Santa Fe and Oregon trails. Union soldiers also camped here during the Civil War. Exhibits include 19th-century timber frame cabin replicas, manual labor tools (used by children), teachers' living quarters, classrooms and dormitories. Basket making workshops are also offered for children of all ages.

The Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club, located within the community of Prairie Village, is a lush, well-maintained course. Its various sized greens are predominantly flat and its fairways wide and lined with trees. Water hazards and sand bunkers are dispersed throughout the course to create intriguing challenges for golfers.

Nearby Kansas City offers the thrills of a major metropolitan city with world-famous cuisine, shopping, world-class entertainment and shows, notable museums, casinos and professional sports. Those interested in the arts can view exhibits at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Arts or at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, currently undergoing a $200 million expansion. History lovers can visit the American Jazz Museum or The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. And sports fans can root for football's Kansas City Chiefs and engage in the excitement of a game at the Chiefs' home field, Arrowhead Stadium.
